Mochi Tsuki, back (no design)

When people get together to make mochi it's called "Mochi Tsuki."
Most commercial mochi is made by machine. Mochi made the old fashioned way is pounded in a wood or granite bowl with wooden mallets.

What is mochi?

Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made from special sweet rice. When people come together to make mochi it is called "Mochi Tsuki." Mochi Tsuki often occurs between Christmas and New Year's because mochi is traditionally part of the New Year's feast or "Oshogatsu."
